A juicy, medium-bodied red from Chile’s Maule Valley made from 100% País. Expect fresh strawberry, sour cherry and wildflowers, with dried herbs, bright acidity and a gentle earthy grip. It’s fresh and incredibly drinkable, with enough structure to hold its own at the dinner table.
The really cool part is the vines. País Viejo comes from dry-farmed vines that are more than 100 years old, planted in the granitic sandy soils of Maule. The grapes are picked by hand and fermented naturally with native yeasts in old concrete tanks, keeping the focus firmly on the fruit and those incredible old vines.
País itself is one of the oldest grapes in the Americas. It arrived in Chile with Spanish missionaries in the 16th century and was the backbone of Chilean wine long before Cabernet Sauvignon came along. Today, producers like Bouchon are helping give these historic País vines the attention they deserve.
Give it a slight chill, put some food on the table, and see why a 100-year-old vineyard can still make something this ridiculously easy to drink.
