A textured, lightly skin-contact white from Emilia-Romagna made from a field blend of local grapes including Pignoletto, Albana and Montuni. Stone fruit and citrus peel meet almond, wild herbs and a little jasmine, with a salty, chalky finish. It’s dry and medium-bodied, with just enough grip from the skins to give it some extra personality.

Samodia is the project of Jacopo Stigliano and Flavio Restani, created around old vineyards in the hills of Valsamoggia outside Bologna. Rather than focusing on a single grape, they work with the traditional mixed vineyards of the area, where numerous local varieties were planted together and historically made into one wine.

The 2024 comes from old vines growing on limestone soils at more than 400 metres above sea level. Part of the fruit spends a few days fermenting on its skins while the rest is directly pressed, with the wine then resting in concrete. The result sits somewhere between a classic white and a full-on orange wine, with freshness, texture and a gently savoury edge.

A little golden, a little grippy and very Emilia-Romagna. The kind of white that makes you want cheese immediately.
